About this park
Mitchelville Freedom Park
Mitchelville Freedom Park preserves the site of the first self-governed freedmen's community in the United States, established in 1861 on Hilton Head Island. The park features interpretive trails that tell the story of the Mitchelville community and its significance in American history. The adjacent Fish Haul Beach and Mitchelville Beach Park offer a peaceful shoreline setting. The park is one of the island's most historically meaningful destinations.
